Matt Kemp has been named National League Player of the Week for the period of April 4-8, 2012. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.
In four games last week, Kemp batted .412 (7-for-17) while leading the Majors with six runs scored and tying for the Major League lead with eight RBI and 14 total bases. His two home runs and seven hits were both tied for third among National Leaguers, while his .824 slugging percentage ranked seventh. The Oklahoma native became the first Dodger to have three consecutive multi-hit games to begin a season since Adrian Beltre in 2000. Kemp collected hits in each of the first four games, extending his hitting streak to 16 games dating back to last season. His bat helped the Dodgers to a 3-0 start for the first time since 1999.
The 27-year-old led the Dodgers out of the gate, going 2-for-5 with three RBI and a towering two-run homer en route to a 5-3 victory at San Diego’s PETCO Park on Opening Day. On April 6th, 2011 N.L. All-Star went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored as the Dodgers took the second game of their four-game set at San Diego, 6-0. Kemp notched his third consecutive multi-hit effort on Saturday, going 2-for-4 with two RBI as the Dodgers topped San Diego, 6-5, in 11 innings. Kemp, a sixth round selection in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, clubbed his second home run of the
season in Sunday’s 8-4 loss to the Friars.
