Around the Horn

It seems as though the Giants are in full-fear mode, given the trade for Hanley Ramirez and the Dodgers' statement on the field each of the last two days. Here are some thoughts of Bruce Jenkins, writer of the San Francisco Chronicle:

  • If Clayton Kershaw shuts down San Francisco in Sunday's series finale, general manager Brian Sabean might have no choice but to make another move.
  • Shift now to the Dodgers' clubhouse, where the Hanley Ramirez trade has changed everything: the mood, the postseason hopes, the level of fear from the opposition.
  • Marco Scutaro is going to help the Giants but he's strictly a handyman. Ramirez, when properly motivated (and why wouldn't he be right now?), is a difference-maker.
  • It was a popular opinion, shared by this column, that the Giants had enough to win the division as of last week. Add Ramirez and a rotation guy to the Dodgers, and you'd have to wonder which team has the most deep-down belief.
  • Perhaps the poker-faced GM (Sabean) has an impact deal in his back pocket. It wouldn't be a first. In the meantime, by Sunday evening, we'll probably have seen quite enough of the Dodgers.

Buster Olney has this to share about Saturday's game:
  • From ESPN Stats and Info: In the first two games of the Dodgers' series with the Giants, only five of the 37 pitches Kemp has seen have been inside (13.5 percent). Only two of the inside pitches have been in the strike zone, and those are the only two inside pitches Kemp has swung at. Both of those were in Saturday's game; one resulted in his home run and the other in his first double of the game.
  • From Elias Sports Bureau: Kemp went 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs Saturday afternoon in the Dodgers' win against the Giants. Kemp has 15 homers and is hitting .342 in 50 games this season. Only two other players in Dodgers history hit at least 15 homers with a batting average of .340 or better through his first 50 games of a season: Roy Campanella in 1955 (.342, 17 HR) and Manny Ramirez in 2008 (.398, 17 HR).
