Orel Hershiser
with Jerry B. Jenkins
1989
The Pitch
Written following his magical 1988 season, Orel Hershiser takes you inside the meticulous brain of the Cy Young Award winner. Sport Magazine called him the smartest pitcher in baseball and it's easy to see why. Orel tells of his upbringing and influences, life in the minor leagues, and some of the best tales on the art of pitching. All throughout are numerous detailed accounts of his brilliant pitching performances of the 1988 season.
Best Quote
"Guess who's gonna hit if Davis gets on?" I asked Sosh.
He shrugged. "Dempsey or Anderson, I guess."
"Nope. Gibby."
He looked hard at me. "Gibby can't hit. He can't even walk."
Conversation in the dugout between Heshiser and Scioscia after Orel
had just witnessed Kirk Gibson hitting off of the tee in the clubhouse.
Game 1, Ninth inning, 1988 World Series.
Highlights
- Hershiser breaks down the art of pitching into five parts: attitude; mechanics; strategy; regimen; and game day. Truly fascinating.
- Getting inside Orel's head as he reminisces through the 59 inning scoreless streak is gripping.
- So many tales in this book, the whole thing is a highlight!
Overall Rating: Home Run!
Out of the Blue is a must read for all Dodgers fans. In a year where the "improbable has happened" Orel Herhsiser relives the intensity of 1988 and takes you along for the ride. Though his Christianity is prevelant throughout, Orel uses those beliefs as personal inspiration - not as a form of bashing over others - and clearly his faith is a huge part of his character. His descriptions of game day preparation, game situations, and celebrations are some of the best ever. Highly recommended.
